Southlander Squires

No amazon noblewoman is already born a Dame. Just like anyone else, they are born cute little babies that grow strong and beautiful, until reaching about 14 years old, and then deciding either or not to undergo a long and arduous training throughout several years of harsh dutiful service to an already knighted Dame, in the hopes of one day perhaps becoming a Dame too.

Of course, they have to be highborns and already display a visible amount inherent bravery in order to be chosen as a squire by any actual Dame, but in certain rare times, humble low-born youngsters who show great talent and virtue might end up being accepted as squires too. (That if a Dame actually does not have an eligible daughter of her own blood to be her squire, because nepotism is a real thing among the nobility.)

The most important thing is, therefore, to impress the Dame who will be the master, because only a knighted Dame can recruit another brand new Dame. There simply isn't such a thing as a "Dame Boot Camp", so the all the training is done directly from one master to one apprentice, being passed on from generation to generation, and always conserving all the knightly traditions and virtues as their most valuable teachings.

For about 10 years, those young noble ladies who were chosen to be squires leave their homes and follow their masters everywhere they go. During that period, they are taught how to ride, how to fight, how to properly wield, sharpen and maintain a sword, as well as how to groom their steeds and how to behave in a proper knightly manner. They also learn the strict code of conduct of the Southlander Dames, being deeply encouraged to adopt the virtues of loyalty, honour and chivalry into the very core of their personalities.

If a Dame goes on patrol, so does her squire as an armed escort. If a Dame goes to a feast, so does her squire as a companion. And if a Dame is called to war, her squire will also follow her as an aide-de-camp. From polishing armour pieces and acting as stablegirls, to help managing taxes and writing detailed field reports, those young ladies are already expected to do a little bit of everything, learning stuff by example and practice rather than theory.

At the end of those long 10 years, the responsible Dame will finally evaluate if the squire is ready or not to be a Dame too. If she approves it, the young girl will be brought to High Hera and go through a series of harsh trials to test her bravery, skills and virtues. Shall her succeed, the young squire is then brought to the presence of the Queen of Arandolia herself, to whom she must make a solemn oath of chivalry and swear fealty from the very bottom of her heart. On the main hall of the throne room, the youngster shall kneel as humble squire, only to rise as dignified Southlander Dame.
