Amazon Colonies in Vinland

4.jpg

First Settlers in Vinland (~500 AD)

As the Arandolian Archipelago is located in the middle of the Northern Atlantic Ocean, it was a relatively easy leap for the adventurous Norse Amazons from Eldara to discover North America, centuries before the Europeans. Thousands of Longships carried countless expeditions into the New World, building colonies all over the cold Canadian coastline, where Norse amazons prospered fishing, hunting and foraging.

The Longhips' limited seaworthy capabilities meant any extensive trade with the colonies would be too costly, the Vinlander Settlers remained deeply isolated from the Amazon Motherland for several centuries, struggling to make themselves self-sufficient while constantly fending off native uprises. But their technological advantage was handy, as stone walls, steel weapons and armour, Longbows and longships gave the amazon settlers the upper hand, enabling the Vinlander Amazons to grow in strength and number and completely take over all the coastline from New Foundland to Nova Scotia, with smaller trade outposts established as far as Florida.

The Age of Discovery (1500 AD)

When the Europeans came to North America, however, the technology disparity turned against the Norse Amazons, who at this point were still using longbows against firearms and cannons. Longships against Carracks. All trade posts were lost. Everything South of the Saint John River was colonized by the English and the Dutch, while the French bypassed the Amazon Colonies and settled further North in Quebec. Skirmishes between Amazons and Europeans became common, with relations being very much alike the native-americans due to the pagan nature of the Amazons.

Conflict only escalated further during the Amazon Civil War in 1602 AD. As the Amazon Motherland in Arandolia descended into chaos, the French took the opportunity to invade Vinland and cease land from the amazon colonists, raiding their cities and kicking the seed-amazons out while trying to convert the females to Christianity. Vinland was reduced to a handful of free cities in New Eldara (Newfoundland) and Sigridsburg (Nova Scotia), becoming on the brink of eradication.

However, when the Amazon Civil War ended with the defeat of the rebels in 1605 AD, Queen Samantha the Usurper was convinced by the amazon clergy to exile the rebels in Vinland rather than butcher them. Forty Thousand Amazon Veterans were sent to Vinland, where the Queen believed they'd soon either starve in the upcoming winter or be crushed and assimilated by the French.

Such a plan backfired spectacularly when the leader of the exiled rebels, Thalia Therasdotter of Therahaven, stroke a deal with the English, granting several trade concessions of Fur and fish to England in exchange of weapons, cannons and naval support for the Amazons to fight the French and retake all the land Vinland lost.

With thousands of well-armed and modernized Amazon Veterans under her command, plus the full support of the Vinlander local amazons and some help of the English Navy, Thalia pushed the French all the way to Quebec and then completely out of Canada, renaming Quebec City as New Therahaven and making it the new home of the exiles, as well as the capital of the Vinland Confederation, a free and self-governed Amazon Nation in the New World, with no ties to the Amazon Motherland.

The Golden Age of Piracy (1600 AD)

The fur trade with England brought some income to the Amazons, but the concessions given during the Franco-Amazon Colonial War made the profits meager to say the least. Fishing, logging and foraging granted a base living, but the Amazons soon found a much more profitable venture to engage on.

When Quebec was taken, the Amazons captured several forts, ports and ships. Firearms, cannons and modern warships were disassembled and reverse-engineered, while some vessels were crewed up by Amazons and employed in the new booming Privateer business. Bearing letters of mark from England, Amazon Pirate Ships swiftly caught up on modern navigation technology and sailed far South to plunder and raid Spanish, French and Dutch vessels in the Caribbean, using Port Royal as their main base of operations but bringing all of the plunder, captives and captured ships back to Vinland.

Most of the treasures were used to develop Vinland's cities, industry and infrastructure, with lumberyards, sawmills, shipwrights, dry docks, cannon foundries and gunsmiths popping up all over. New ships of Amazon design breaking the waves, expanding the amazon corsair fleet and bringing even more plunder as Amazon pirate ships reached all the way to Africa and South America.

Development soon attracted a vast influx of Amazon migrants from the Motherland, as Vinland bloomed while Arandolia stagnated in a fierce isolationism imposed by the Usurper Queen. At the same time, vast Vinlander trade fleets started opening direct trade routes to Europe, selling fur, timber and fish to Britain, Germany and Scandinavia. Massive profits selling guns during the 30 years war, as well as taking in tens of thousands of female German refugees across the ocean to boost Vinland's small population and help colonize the Great Lakes.

By the time the Second Amazon Civil War loomed in the horizon, the Vinlander Confederacy had a population of over One Million people, including Amazons, Europeans and a lot of half-amazons. Enough to send their strong modernized navy back to the Motherland, where this time the Usurper Queen would meet the end of her Iron Fist over the Amazon kin.
