Hierarchy of the Amazon Aristocracy

Most regions of Arandolia are ruled by powerful local aristocracies. Usually hereditary or appointed titles under a strict system of suzerainty, their ranks (from the top to the bottom) are as discribed below.

Lady: Not an actual title. The term "Lady" is the formal designation for any amazon of noble blood. It is commonly used to address any nobility title from Dame to Queen, but more prominently employed to address low-ranking nobles who actually hold no actual power, land or titles.

Dame: A military title. The equivalent of Knight in Western Europe. Amazon Dames are women either born in the nobility or knighted for their bravery and prowess in combat, but they must necessarily remain in service of the military to keep their titles. They hold small plots of land granted by the landed nobility who knighted them, swearing fealty to those higher-ranking ladies and being bound in servitude to their names. Either on horseback or on foot, they are martial experts, elite troops in the amazon military.

Baroness: Lowest-ranking title that actually holds any political power within Arandolia. A Baroness is the woman responsible for the immediate territory of a Castle, a Town or a Village, entitled to govern and protect the local population. They may have Dames sworn to their names, but no vassals.

Viscountess: A non-hereditary, either administrative or judicial position occupied by a magistrate named by a Countess. Viscountesses hold no lands and no subjects, yet they outrank Baronesses and Dames, because they hold the power to condemn and absolve any suspect of a felony who holds a title lower than Countess.

Countess: An intermediate rank amongst the amazon nobility. A Countess rules over not only her own Castle or City, but also over all the other towns and villages in the entire County where it is located. They have the power to write their own laws inside their lands, appoint Viscountesses as magistrates to enforce those laws and have Baronesses as their own direct vassals. However, a Countess is often also the vassal to either a Duchess or to the Queen herself.

Duchess: High-ranking noble amongst the amazon nobility. A Duchess is the ruler of a vast territory within Arandolia and the sovereign over several Countesses and Baronesses. She answers only to the Queen and her title is hereditary, always passing from mother to firstborn daughter.

Archduchess: In Arandolia, an Archduchess is the ruler of a coalition or league of several autonomous Counties and/or City-States. She is usually more powerfull than a Duchess, but her title isn't hereditary. Each Archduchess is always appointed by the Queen herself, and answers only to her Majesty.

Princess: The legitimate heiress of the Arandolian Royal Throne. She can hold other titles such as Countess, Duchess or Archduchess, but upon becoming Queen she must renounce all else.

Queen: The Royal Throne itself. Highest title in the arandolian aristocracy. One Queen rules above all the autonomous regions of Arandolia. Be them autocracies, democracies or republics, every amazon faction answers to the Queen. Unconditionally.

Hierarchy of non-aristocratic Regions

Although most Arandolian regions have feudal and aristocratic systems of government, there are also those self-ruled autonomous regions and City-States which locally adopt different systems of government of their own. Democracies, Theocracies, Republics, Oligarchies and even Tribal Confederations within Arandolia have their own distinct hierarchies, and they work as follows:

  • Theocracy: In some regions of Arandolia (specially at the Marble Strip), the priestesses of the many goddesses of the Amazon Pantheon are so influent that they actually hold political and military power over the local population. In such cases, a High Priestess is appointed by the curia of Amazon Priestesses to rule over the region in question, acting pretty much just like a Duchess or a Countess would act in her place. The only actual difference is that the title is neither hereditary nor appointed by the Queen, but "chosen by the goddesses themselves".

  • Classical Democracy: Introduced to the amazons along with the Helenization of Arandolia, it is a system of direct democracy adapted from ancient Athens itself. It is still in full vigour at many autonomous City-States on the southwestern quadrant of Arandolia. Each participating citizens vote directly on local legislation and executive bills, which are always debated in an open assembly at each city's senate. There is no centralized ruler such as a president or governor, only appointed ministers and officers elected by the senate, so political resolutions tent to be fair and take into account every citizen's points of view. However, this process is rather slow and costly, so in times of war or in dire need of immediate action, an Amazon Strategos is elected to act as a centralized ruler for brief periods of 2 to 5 years, holding total power over the entire City-State till the crisis is averted.

  • Oligarchy: Not all of the many City-States within Arandolia adopted Democracy as their local form of government. Some of them adopted much simpler oligarchic systems in which only the richest and most influent families have access to political offices. Either by forbiding the masses of voting altogether or by establishing censitary suffrage to give yet more power to te rich, power is heavily concentrated in the hands of the wealthy, eliminating the need of a centralized ruler by assigning all the government power in the hands of a small council of Matricians. Such is the case of Salacia, as well as some City-States at the shores of Amphitrite Bay.

  • Elder Republic: Also known as Seniority Republic, it is a midterm in between a Democracy and an Oligarchy. An Elder Republic is the specific case of the City-State of Eldara, where every family within the region has the same access to representation in the government by holding 1 chair in the city's renowned Council of Elders. By tradition, only the eldest member of every family has the right to sit on that chair and take part on the council, thus the name "Elder Republic". The Elders therefore decide everything amongst themselves, while the council itself is always presided by a Chairwoman, who receives that post through being the Eldest Eldarian woman alive. Just like in a Democracy, the Council of Elders usually elect a Consul to rule upon them all in times of war or need, and this Consul doesn't have to be necessarely as old as the Elders themselves.

  • Tribal Confederation: On the cold vast steppes of Windcliff, the semi-nomadic ways of the locals still divides them in several clans with their own culture and traditions. Each clan is ruled by a Chieftess, who would be the equivalent of a Countess, if they actually had castles and fixed seats of power. However, the Windcliff Riders are always on the move throughout the vast pastures of the cold northern steppes of Arandolia, thus the seat of power of their Chieftesses are the very saddle of their horses, not an actual throne. They are therefore a Confederation of United Clans, whose chieftesses assemble and ellect a Grand Chieftess from amongst themselves every 10 years to rule upon all Windcliff. The Grand Chieftess acts just like an Archduchess, but instead of being appointed by the Queen, she is appointed by the other chieftesses, granting her far more freedom and autonomy from the Arandolian Royal Crown than any actual Archduchess on the far South.

  • Anarchism: The complete absence of government is also a form of government, up to some extent. So the Edgelands is quite unique in having a government without any kind of law or order. No one rules, so crime and impunity run rampant there. The survival of the fittest plays its due part on this accursed region's population.

Hierarchy within the Amazon Religious Sects

Nun: Any amazon devoted to the goddesses in service of the Clergy. Nuns usually work in temples as servants, librarians, nurses, teachers and all kinds of menial tasks, doing most of the daily mundane shores for the Priestesses who they are assigned to serve. Some of them might even be footsoldiers in times of war, but they hold no religious authority at all.

Sacred Dame: A monastic warrior, drafted from amongst the ranks of the footsoldier nuns who display outstanding skill and courage in combat. Depending on the goddess they follow, their gear and demeanor may vary a lot. Overall, they must remain chaste, hold no material possessions to their own name aside from their military gear and horses, being always thoroughly devoted to the single purpose of defending the will of the goddesses. Their military training is harsh and challenging, in such a way that very few nuns ever graduate to receive the title of Sacred Dame.

Priestess: Preachers of the Amazon Religion, responsible for spreading the word of the goddesses, either within a temple or as missionaries. Every priestess must be devoted to one goddess, specializing herself on that single deity for the rest of her life. Although all regions worship all goddesses, some regions of Arandolia may have a Patron Goddess, which means a substantially larger presence of priestesses devoted to her teachings.

Matron: The priestess in charge of a Shrine, Temple, Cemetery, Nunnery, Orphanage, Hospital, Sacred Grove or any other religious establishment.

Inquisitress: A prosecutor, directly appointed by the curia of high priestesses at the Marble Strip, whose sacred duty is to thoroughly investigate, prosecute and punish all those who fell victim to the foul temptations of heresy and darkness.

High Priestess: Each amazon goddess has one priestess ruling over all the other priestesses devoted to that same deity. This woman is elected by her peers to serve as High Priestess in the deity's name. Such a title is the highest rank for each particular sect of the amazon religion, and the chosen woman will be the respective goddess' voice on Earth.

Supreme Priestess: The ultimate leader of the Amazon Religion as a whole. Devoted to all the goddesses at once, the Supreme Priestess is elected by the curia of High Priestess to be the closest link to divinity amongst the mortals. She is the one entitled to unite all the sects, promote peace and purge heresy from Arandolia, sitting as the head of the theocratic region of the Marble Strip and commanding all the faithful religious warrioresses amongst the amazons. She holds immense religious and military power within her hands, but as a sign of sheer devotion, every supreme priestess can only be in power for 100 years. After that time is due, she must sacrifice herself to the goddesses, naming 5 favoured candidates to succeed her.
