Battlefield Role: Mercenary Light Infantry

Weapons: A spear and a reinforced wooden round shield.

Outfit: Nasal steel helmet with a coif of mail. A fur cape over a brigandine vest, plus leather vambraces and boots.

Skill level: Moderate melee experience. (Mostly from battle itself)

Affiliation: Whaler's Bay

Doctrine: Amphitrite's Way of the Seafarer

Strengths: Unlike the rest of the amazons from Whaler's Bay, those mercenaries prefer to fight on dry land.

Weaknesses: They are fearless and eager to show their boldness, but have no actual military training. Also, they might disband or turncoat if the enemy offers them a better deal.

Beluga Mercenaries

While whale hunting and privateering are by far the best sources of income and renown at Whaler's Bay, there are always those awkward amazons from those parts who are different from the people around them and do not actually like the sea all that much. This might make them the black sheep of their families, but that doesn't mean they are cowards! For some reason or other, they simply prefer dry land beneath their feet, opting to make their own fortunes as mercenaries in other provinces rather than venturing the waves like the rest of their own kin.

Sometimes they just get easily nauseated by the rocking of the waves, or perhaps they did like the sea until suffering a trauma aboard a vessel. But regardless of the reason why they opted to be land-based mercenaries, those awkward black sheeps and outcasts get together under a warband, arm themselves with whichever weapon they can afford to buy and gladly sell their loyalty to the highest bidder.

They fight just as bravely (and recklessly) as any other amazon from Whaler's Bay, and being land-based infantry units assures them far more stable jobs and opportunities than at sea. They earn less, of course, but they always have a job or a gig just around the corner.

And despite their regiments' names, they aren't all solely from the City of Beluga. They wear the colours of the capital city of Whaler's Bay and proudly carry the Beluga Sigil on their shields, but that's just because the biggest whaling city of the region is where the local mercenary warbands are assembled and outfitted. Many of them come from the many small fishing villages on that vast bay, while others are even immigrant peasants from the northern part of the region who want to try their luck in soldiering. Regardless of their origins, anyone is very wellcome to join the band, as long as they can properly use a spear.

In the end, it is the ultimate greed for money that unites those bold mercenaries. Money binds them together, and spending it in wine and whores is what keeps them happy and motivated. As long as cash is always steadily flowing in, they will gladly risk their necks for their employers. However, shall the money ever stop coming, you better send them home soon, because otherwise they might very well seek a new job amongst your enemy's ranks.
