Spearmaidens
Spearmaidens are basically low-ranking professional soldiers armed with spears and shields. They usually wear moderate levels of armour and also carry a knife in case their spears break, but their focus is keeping the enemy at bay by using their long-reaching polearms.
As those women usually come from humble origins and poor families, they can't afford proper training and equipment, depending a lot on the generosity of their Ladies. Therefore, although every single region has Spearmaiden units on their armies, the quality of armour, equipment and training substantially varies from place to place.
Theravalley, for example, is famous for investing a lot of resources on their soldiers' capabilities and gear, while other regions such as Salacia prefers to take advantage of greater numbers of cheap spearwomen soldiers, not caring too much for the personal safety of their low-ranking soldiers. After all, such basic units are very easy to replenish with new raw recruits. Yet those are human lives that are at stake.
Another very important factor that influences a lot in the Spearmaidens overall survivability is the way how their generals deploy them in battle. Their spears are amazing defensive weapons, excellent for forming up spearwalls and phalanxes to protect the flanks and the front lines, but it is not uncommon to see overbearing highborn commanders ordering entire Spearmaiden regiments to charge head on onto the enemy front lines, using them like mere cannon fodder to draw hostile arrows and artillery fire towards them as the bulk of their forces maneuver somewhere else. This is often a fatal error, because unless those low-ranking women have a lot of training and a huge admiration for their leader, their morale won't last long before their resolve crumbles and their lines shatter in full retreat. They are only human after all, and no human being will stand and fight for a Lady who treats them like meat shields.
