Priestesses of Athena

As the Goddess of Wisdom and Knowledge, Athena is worshiped mostly by those who are always in the glorious pursuit of learning, seeking enlightenment above all other more mundane things in life. Every library, school, university and many military academies have at least a shrine dedicated to her name, while the largest centers of erudition, diplomacy, culture, literature and philosophy in Arandolia usually have great public libraries built entirely in Athena's honour.

As such, the Priestesses of Athena are largely present in all places where knowledge is kept, spread and created. They are scholars before anything else, fully dedicated to acquiring, classifying and advancing knowledge itself, perpetuating the never-ending cycle in which they teach others just as much as they also learn from whoever they interact with.

Most of them acquire so much information from books and from personal experience throughout their long life spans that a lot of people seek them for wise advices in the most diverse matters. And to be completely honest here, more often than not they do find at least a satisfactory answer!

Although their main fields of study and research are the philosophy, rhetoric and history, the Priestesses of Athena are always open to learn a little bit about everything, which gives them a formidable wisdom at seeing answers and solutions to many problems in the most unlikely places. From simple ordinary matters of daily life, to the most intrinsic and complex existential questions one might think about, these remarkably intelligent women never turn down a chance to widen the range of what they know.

However, all that comes with a price to pay. Unlike the priestesses of other goddesses, who are chosen by birthright, devotion, skill at arms, charisma or even for their beauty, the Pristesses of Athena are chosen for their minds, when they are still little kids. The brightest minds of every amazon school get to be presented to the high priestesses at the many great libraries dedicated to Athena, where only the smartest and most promising children get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of becoming one of them.

Upon accepting such an opportunity, the children must them leave their own homes, families and mundane possessions behind, moving to the libraries where they shall fully devote themselves to books for the rest of their lives. Of course, they may still visit their beloved ones whenever they want, but never again they shall wear anything else but long white robes covering most of their bodies. That's because they must remain chaste for as long as they serve Athena in their personal pursuit of knowledge, for Athena herself is also believed to be a virgin in order to fully devote her own divine self to impartial knowledge and wisdom just as well.
