Ophidisian Foot-Marines

The City-State of Ophidisia has a long history of being invaded by Athenian land forces coming from their Northern neighbors, who for centuries coveted a port of their own at the great Bay of Amphitrite. The Ophidisian Amazons always counted on the rest of their Amphitritian kin to fight by their side and help them push back the Athenian Amazons, though the bulk of the fighting was always done by Ophidisian own land forces.

On account of that, the marines of Ophidisia began to turn their eyes away from the seas and further inland to the dense rein-forests of their home region. In order to protect their borders and the exotic tropical forests that provide them luxurious wood for exportation, the City-State of Ophidisia decided to invest on amphibious regiments of what they call "Foot-Marines". Troops that excel in both naval and land warfare, demanding more time to be trained and adaptive equipment for fighting either seaborne or on dry land as the situation demands. The result is a naval military unit that no longer rely heavily on their vessels to fight in land campaigns. They are the best low-tier land-fighting infantry Amphitrite Bay can offer, being a big card to be played either in defend their homeland or invading other regions in extended marches across the land.

It must also be noted that Ophidisian Foot-Marines are drafted from the commoner masses of the villages settled on the margins of River Schlange. The military provided them a great chance of social ascension into a dignified middle class, which makes them exceptionally loyal and diligent to fight for their City-State's elite. They are very stout fighters, really hard to be made yield their swords in battle.
