Athenian Champagne Warhorses

The Athenian Fields is a really vast and fertile set of flatlands, where wheat grows in abundance across wide prairies almost all year long. It is simply a great natural habitat for large herbivore creatures to roam free and grow strong with abundance of food, and as such, it has always been densely inhabited by wild horses. Also, the vast naturally occuring fields of golden wheat meant a natural selection of the rare Champagne gene happening thoughout the ages within the herds of athenian wild equines, which gradually made the majority of them golden and bronze hued, both in their coat and in their manes and tails.

When the Amazons finally started colonizing this virginal region back in 700 B.C., they found plenty of herds to tame. This new breed of horses proved to be quite a docile yet resilient one, larger and stronger than the average horse breeds due to the sheer abundance of food around them. Soon races and agility competitions started to take place along the many sport events of this culturally diverse region, and when war finally came to happen, the Athenian Horses proved to be great at charging enemy units, supporting even the heaviest-armoured riders on their backs without ever slowing down.

They are therefore widely employed in heavy cavalry Athenian Cataphract regiments, as their overall high speed and acceleration, combined with the heavy weights of steed, rider and armour combined, results in enough momentum to make their charge absolutely devastating! It is just a matter of planning such charges carefully so not to force the steeds to go beyond their limits, and also relying heavily on massed maneuvers and herd mentality, as each Athenian horse is rather coward on its own, but among a herd they will follow the rest of the charging steeds without hesitation. Even against a wall of deadly pikes.
